3 Kapitel 10.3: Relative Pronouns for Indefinite Pronouns

10.3:  Relative Pronouns for Indefinite Pronouns

In section 10-1, you learned about relative clauses and relative pronouns.  In this section, you’ll learn how to make a relative clause with indefinite pronouns.

Whenever we have a relative clause that needs a relative pronoun for etwas, nichts, or alles, we use was instead of the big chart of relative pronouns that you learned in section 10-1.

For etwas, nichts, alles: use WAS

Beispiele:

  • Sie kochte alles, was in der Küche war. (refers to alles)
  • Alles, was ich besitze, steht in der Garage. (refers to alles)
  • Er guckte etwas, was ich nicht so toll fand. (refers to etwas)
  • Es gibt nichts, was mich interessiert, im Kino. (refers to nichts)

If we translate this to English, it sounds sort of odd, but occasionally, we hear older people talk like this:

  • She cooked everything what she had in the kitchen.
  • Everything what I own is in the garage.
  • He watched something what I didn’t find so great.
  • There is nothing what interested me at the movies.

This concept is fairly easy to learn, but the tricky part comes in when you have it mixed up with other relative clauses.  Here’s a review with all relative clauses below–including relative pronouns for indefinite pronouns.
