10.2: Directional Prefixes hin and her
You’ve probably seen the words hin and her by now in the German you’ve read (or heard.) These are directional prefixes that tell you which direction the subject is going.
WHEN to use hin and her:
- When the sentence has a verb of motion but doesn’t say WHERE you’re going.
Beispiele:
- Ich gehe in den Supermarkt. ←This example tells where we’re going by the phrase “in den Supermarkt.” Therefore, we don’t have to have a directional prefix (hin/her) anywhere.
- Ich gehe hinein. ←This example has no prepositional phrase that tell us where we’re going, so we add hin to the verb ein·gehen—to go in.
Hin and her usually attach to other directional prepositions.
- Up: auf→hinauf, herauf
- Down: unter→hinunter, herunter
- In: ein→hinein, herein
- Out: aus→hinaus, heraus
- Over: über→hinüber, herüber

Frage: But I’m still confused! How do I know when I have to use hin and her in my sentence?
Antwort: Whenever the sentence does NOT have a phrase that tells where you are going, such as ins Kino (to the movies) or in den Bus (into the bus) or aus dem Haus (out of the house).
Ex. A: Hin und her. Beschreiben Sie jedes Bild.
Colloquial German and Directional Prefixes:
Don’t be surprised if you hear the directional prefix her shortened to just an “r.”
- Komm doch (he)rein!
- Steig (he)rein!
AND…often in colloquial German, hin is also replaced with just an “r.”
- Oma ist gerade reingekommen. Gehen wir raus?
- Spring rüber!
- Geh raus!
