Woman comes into my work

says she won’t eat at the diner in town

the women who work there ain’t clean

there’s not a man alive who’d touch them

not even with a 10-foot pole she says

says no there’s one who would and does

can’t think of his name but says I’d know

she says he’s the one who dresses up

does those shows in an Elvis suit

says he plays at the VFW pretty regular

does all those birthdays and hoedowns

anyhow she says he sits there every day

before and a good while after lunch

says he always wears one of those uniforms

the blue kind like from the gas company

he’s not in one of those jumpsuits I ask

says there’s no rhinestone on those suits

says she can see straight in from her office

ain’t nobody going there for the lunch

none of the women know any different

says maybe they don’t even care

asks again if I know but I don’t let on

says it’s a Bible name and a common one

tells me she knows I know who she means

I do but I won’t speak my father’s name
